When Life Feels Overwhelming: Returning to the Peace of Christ

There are seasons in life when everything feels so full and not necessarily bad, just full.

Your schedule fills up with new opportunities and your responsibilities expand and before you know it, the control and calm you once felt now beings to feel unmanagable.  You’re not in crisis, but you’re also not able to feel peace – too much is going on to take even a moment of quiet reflection or pause.

If you’ve ever found yourself in that space, you’re not alone.

Why We Lose Our Peace (Even When Life Is Good)

Many of us assume we lose peace just when life gets hard but often, that’s not always the case.  Because it’s not always the hard things that overwhelm us…
it’s can be the good things too.

I always say the path to overwhelm is rooted in good intentions because most of the time it’s not the good things in your life that are the problem… it’s when we begin picking up more and more without pausing to stay grounded in Christ.

Over time, those good things start to feel heavier and heavier and that weight starts to show up in subtle ways:

  • Irritability

  • Mental overload

  • Difficulty staying present

  • Backing out of commitments

  • Feeling stretched too thin

A Picture of Overwhelm

Have you ever walked into the grocery store planning to grab just one or two things?  You tell yourself,
“I don’t need a cart… I’ll just carry it.”  But then something is on sale so you pick it up or you remember something else you needed.  You grab one more thing… and then another.

Before long, your arms are full and you’re awkwardly balancing everything, hoping nothing falls.  And when something finally does fall, everything comes crashing down.

And in that moment, you think: “I should have grabbed a cart.”

Our lives can look a lot like that when we pick things up along the way because they’re good, useful, or meaningful.  But eventually, what we’re carrying becomes more than we can hold on our own – we realize we should have grabbed a cart!

Peace Isn’t Something You Maintain

For a long time, I believed peace was something I had to maintain, that if I loved God enough… if I had the right mindset… or if I stayed disciplined to keep everything in order… I would stay peaceful.

But life has shown me that peace isn’t something I have to maintain perfectly but that peace is something, or someONE, we get to return to.

Peace Is a Relationship, Not a Performance

Scripture calls Jesus the Prince of Peace.  In John 14:27, Jesus says:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.”

His peace is not dependent on our circumstances and it’s not something we create because Jesus makes it clear it’s something we receive, and can return to, through Him.

And in Isaiah 26:3, we’re reminded:

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”

So we know peace is not about perfect conditions, it’s about where our minds and hearts return when life becomes loud.

The Real Reason We Feel Overwhelmed

Returning to that grocery store moment…the real problem wasn’t the groceries.  The problem was walking into the store without the cart.

And many of us do the same thing in our daily lives.

We wake up, check our phones, respond to messages and step straight into responsibilities.

And before we realize it, we’re already carrying things without pausing to anchor ourselves in Christ.  We never “grabbed the cart” because peace isn’t something we can simply add halfway through the chaos – it’s something we bring with us before we start carrying things.

A Gentle Invitation Back to Peace

The good news is this, you don’t have to figure everything out or carry everything perfectly.  You don’t have to maintain peace on your own… you can return to it…

Again.
And again.
And again.

In Philippians 4:6–7:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This is your invitation to pause, pray, and return to the Source of Peace – the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.

Peace isn’t about your circumstances but it’s remembering who is with you in the middle of it.

Peace is someone you return to – and that someone is Jesus.
