Before Shame, the Body Was Not the Enemy: Caring for Your Body Without Condemnation
Well, Hello, it’s finally and already May. And if you’re like me and so many other women, the warmer weather brings both joy and that familiar little heart-sinking moment when you realize: shorts season is here again. The longer evenings, sunny days, and beach plans sound like paradise… until body image noise starts getting loud. Suddenly, thoughts like these begin to creep in:
I should have started sooner.
I should have stayed consistent.
I wish I felt better in my clothes by now.
This time of year can stir up shame, comparison, regret, and pressure; but what if caring for your body was never meant to begin with shame?
Because before shame, your body was not the enemy. Your body is worth care, but it doesn’t define your worth. It was created by God and carried by grace.
When Self-Care Has Taken a Back Seat
Over the last couple of years, I’ve been in school. Before I went back to college, I was in a pretty consistent rhythm with movement. I used to kickbox, do barre workouts, walk, and hike regularly. Those rhythms were not just about fitness, they helped me feel strong, clear, grounded, and nourished from the inside out.
But with school, family, business, ministry, assignments, deadlines, and life overall, my capacity was stretched. Working out became sporadic and rest was harder to prioritize. Late-night snacking became a way to soothe the anxiety of a large course load and I found myself neglecting some of the rhythms that helped me feel my best.
Maybe you know that feeling too. Maybe it hasn’t been school for you but instead possible it was work, caregiving, motherhood, grief, stress, health challenges, or a season where you were simply trying to keep up with a rapidly spinning world.
And now, as summer approaches, you feel the panic of wishing you had taken better care of yourself sooner. But I want you to be encouraged, you can acknowledge what needs to change without beating yourself up.
You can tell the truth without partnering with shame.
You can say, “I want to feel stronger again,” without deciding you are less worthy until you do.
Stewardship, Not Shame
As Christian women, we often hear that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and with that truth, they are worth stewarding, nourishing, strengthening, and caring for.
But don’t be confused to think our bodies are the measuring stick of our worthiness, they aren’t. Christ in us, is.
When we confuse stewardship with striving, even healthy things can become heavy. Movement becomes punishment for not fitting into our clothes. Nutrition becomes control for a life that feels out of control. And rest becomes guilt when you think you should be doing something else.
Getting healthy becomes less about honoring God and more about trying to earn acceptance. But a place of shame is a terrible starting place for transformation.
You can be exactly where you are and still be invited into something healthier.
You can be loved right now and still be called to take better care of your body.
You can be worthy right now and still begin again.
Those truths can coexist: You do not have to hate where you are in order to move toward something better.
Do It for the Glory of God, Not to Chase Acceptance
In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul writes, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
I love that this verse mentions eating and drinking, because even the ordinary parts of our lives can become worship when they are done from love instead of self-condemnation. The way your nourish, move, care for your body, and speak life over your body can be a way you honor God when it’s done from a posture of stewardship and love, and not self worship.
So yes, take care of your body.
Move your body. Build strength. Eat in a way that supports your health. Get sunlight. Go for the walk. Get your sleep. Ask for help if your body is struggling.
But do it to honor God, not to punish yourself or to make your body an idol.
Romans 8:1 reminds us, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
God may convict us toward healthier stewardship, but He does not condemn us into shame. So if God is not condemning you, maybe it is time to stop living like your body is under condemnation.
Before Shame, the Body Was Not the Enemy
Before we even talk about body image, I think we need to go all the way back to the garden. Genesis 2:25 says Adam and Eve were naked and felt no shame. And that line matters so much because before sin distorted everything, the human body was not something to hide, criticize, compare, obsess over, or cover in shame. Their bodies were simply part of God’s good creation.
They were seen.
Fully known.
Fully uncovered.
And not ashamed.
But after sin entered the story, shame entered too. Genesis tells us that after Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, “the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” This moment is about more than body image, of course. It is about spiritual rupture, fear, hiding, and separation from God.
But isn’t it interesting that shame immediately touched how they saw their bodies?
Their first response to shame was hiding.
And when God came looking for them, Adam said, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
Then God asked him:
“Who told you that you were naked?”
Not, “Why are you naked?”
But, “Who told you?”
In other words: where did that message come from? Who gave you that lens? Who taught you to see yourself through shame?
‘Who Told You?’
I wonder how many of us have had our own version of that moment. The moment we went from simply living in our bodies to suddenly feeling like our bodies were a problem. Maybe someone commented on your weight, shape, belly, legs, height, skin, hair, or clothing. Maybe you remember the first time you realized your body could be judged. Maybe you remember hiding under baggy clothes, avoiding pictures, comparing yourself, or scanning your body before someone else could.
Many of us picked up messages God never spoke over us. Messages that made us think:
“My body is too much.” “My body is not enough.” “I need to hide.” “My worth depends on how I look.”
But those messages did not come from the Father’s heart. God’s original design was never for your value to be measured by how the world sees your body.
The body was created good before shame ever touched the story.
Your body was not created as an enemy to defeat nor was it created as a project to perfect. Your body is not and never will be a measure of your worth.
Your body was created by God to be lived in, cared for, treated with dignity, and honored.
Your Body Has Carried You
Because we live in a fallen world, our bodies change. They age, they carry pain, trauma, hormones, childbirth, recovery, sickness, stress, grief, survival, and medical challenges.
Some of us have walked through very difficult roads with our bodies. But none of that makes the body shameful or a failure. None of that makes your body unworthy of care.
So maybe this summer, the goal is not to obsess over a “summer body.”
Maybe the goal is to walk into summer free from body shame.
Free enough to care for yourself without condemnation and without punishing yourself. Free enough to eat nourishing meals without obsessing and to wear shorts comfortably again! Stop apologizing for the body that has carried you through every hard season you have survived.
A Better Question
Instead of asking, “How do I hide my imperfections?”
Maybe we can ask:
“Lord, how can I honor You with this body, from this place, with compassion?”
Because your body is not the enemy.
Your body is worthy of care because it was created by God and carried by grace.
So if the body image noise is loud for you right now, let this be your invitation to come back to truth, come back to compassion, and begin again with God.
Shame may have entered your story.
But because of Jesus, shame does not get the final say.
