When What You Offer Isn’t Received the Way You Hoped (This Isn’t About the Cake)
As a Christian holistic life coach, lately I’ve found myself slowing down just enough to notice the small moments… the ones I would normally pass right over.
We were throwing a birthday party and cutting the cake, plating it, scooping the ice cream… the whole thing. The cutting of the cake is kind of the climax of the celebration, right? You sing, you serve the cake… and then the party starts to wind down.
But something I’ve noticed that’s happened for years and I never really thought about until recently is you start handing out the cake and there are always those that decline, or ask for just a sliver.
And it’s not a big deal at all, but always in that moment I have this tiny little drop in my heart.
Like…
“Don’t you want to celebrate with me?” or “Don’t you want a piece of this delicious cake I’m offering?”
And I caught myself asking… why does this bother me, even just a little? Even if I know it’s not that deep, it’s cake.
But It Was Never About the Cake
That moment of disappointment is not about the cake, it’s about shared joy. Because part of joy isn’t just experiencing something good, it’s sharing it.
“Rejoice with those who rejoice.” Romans 12:15
There’s something deeply human about wanting others to step into the joy you’re experiencing. So when someone declines… or only partially receives it… there can be a subtle void in the celebration. Not dramatic and not logical, but it is there.
When Love Is How You Give
For many women, especially those who love deeply, what we offer isn’t just what we do… it’s how we love. We serve, create, and show up. So when you’re plating cake, you’re not just serving dessert, this is how we offer love and care.
And when that offering isn’t received the way you hoped… it can feel like a quiet disconnect.
Because something that was meaningful to you was offered – and rejected.
Where This Shows Up in Your Life
This doesn’t just happen at birthday parties, this is only an illustration I think many of us moms, wives, and daughters can relate to. It shows up everywhere when you give of your time, energy, and presence. You show up for people 100% but sometimes, it’s only partially received or not received at all.
And underneath that can be a discouraging thought:
“I wanted this to mean something to them.” and
“I wanted my care to be felt.”
The Deeper Spiritual Truth
As I sat with this, I felt the Holy Spirit gently shift my perspective because isn’t this what we do with God? He offers us fullness.
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
Not a sliver or partial life… fullness. And yet… we often take just a little or even say no altogether to a life that is full in Jesus Christ. What feels safe and manageable isn’t always God’s best for us, isn’t always His fullness. But God, He continues to offer, open-handed, faithfully, and eternally.
Because His nature doesn’t change:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
But our capacity to receive does. Sometimes it’s not that God is withholding… it’s that we are only capable of holding a small portion of what He’s freely giving.
The Tension We Have to Hold
Here’s the truth most of us need to learn: Yes, joy expands when it’s shared. And your desire to give, to include, to offer something good, that’s beautiful. But…
Your joy cannot depend on how it’s received.
Because if it does, you’ll find yourself:
overgiving
overextending
quietly disappointed
trying to get a “full slice” response from people who are only ready for a sliver.
The Shift That Changes Everything
What if you began to live like this:
I will offer what is good from my heart.
I will give from who I am, not from what I need back. And I will let others receive it at their own capacity.
And I will stay anchored…
even if it’s only partially received – even if it’s not received at all – I will still love fully and completely as God has loved me. I will discern when to continue offering vs when to release.
Because the trap is when love isn’t received, we’re tempted to shrink back. Become resentful and bitter, and to stop offering. And we don’t do this to get revenge or because we give with the wrong intentions, I think we do this as a means of self protection.
But don’t let partial rejection make you withhold from the ones who would receive.
“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them…” Luke 15:4
Even if 99 decline… the one who receives it matters. And I often think of this in terms of how I show up online and on social media, because it’s not natural for me to put myself out there. And not everyone will freely receive my message, in fact, many won’t. But I’ve learned that God gave me this assignment not for the audience, but for who I will become in my obedience to it.
A Reflection for You
Take a moment and ask yourself:
Where have I offered something meaningful… but it wasn’t fully received?
Where have I felt that quiet disappointment?
And what would it look like to stay grounded in the goodness of what I offer, regardless of how it’s received?
Because your offering is still good and when it’s done from a place of love and sacrifice God sees it as good too.
Your worth is not diminished by how others respond to it. We see this with the woman who brought the expensive oils to pour out in love on Jesus, while others called it wasteful, Jesus received it fully. He didn’t question it or minimize it. He honored it. (Matthew 26:6–13) What others dismissed, Jesus called beautiful. And that’s the reminder, your offering isn’t defined by how people respond to it, but by the heart it was given from and the One who sees it clearly.
“God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7
So next time you’re slicing the cake… or offering what you deem worthy to share joy and love from abundance, offer it fully and let people take what they’re ready for. Because the truth is, not everybody likes cake, and that’s ok. Some will say no, some will only take a sliver, and some will receive it fully. But the goodness of what you’re offering does not change… just because it wasn’t fully received.
And neither do you.
Because your joy was never meant to be sustained by how others respond, but by the One you’re rooted in.
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10
What you offer in love will always find its way to the hearts ready to receive it
